OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-4.5: A New Kind of Intelligence

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5 as a research preview, marking its most advanced and knowledgeable AI model to date. This new iteration builds upon GPT-4o, expanding pre-training while offering a broader, more general-purpose application beyond previous STEM-focused reasoning models.

What’s New in GPT-4.5?

According to OpenAI’s blog post, early testing suggests that interacting with GPT-4.5 feels more natural than its predecessors. The model boasts a larger knowledge base, improved alignment with user intent, and enhanced emotional intelligence, making it particularly effective for writing, programming, and solving practical problems—all with fewer hallucinations.

Key Features of GPT-4.5:

  • More Natural Interaction: Improved conversational flow, making exchanges feel more human-like.
  • Enhanced Knowledge Base: Expanded pre-training enables the model to tackle a broader range of topics.
  • Better Alignment: Stronger adherence to user intent and more accurate responses.
  • Creative Insights: The ability to recognize patterns and generate innovative ideas without traditional reasoning.
  • New Functionalities: Supports real-time search, file and image uploads, and canvas integration for writing and coding.

Availability and Rollout Plan

The research preview is currently accessible to ChatGPT Pro users, with plans to expand to Plus and Team users next week, followed by Enterprise and Edu users the week after.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that GPT-4.5 does not function as a reasoning model and is not designed for benchmark performance. Instead, he described it as "a different kind of intelligence" that feels more like conversing with a thoughtful individual.

GPU Shortages and Future Expansion

One of the reasons for limiting the initial rollout to Pro users is OpenAI’s current GPU shortage. Altman acknowledged concerns about growth surges but assured users that availability will expand after the company acquires tens of thousands of additional GPUs next week.

What’s Next?

Altman also hinted at the release of GPT-5 within the coming months. This next-generation AI model is expected to integrate various OpenAI technologies, including the company’s omni series (o1 and o3), into both ChatGPT and its API.

With GPT-4.5’s unique capabilities and a major expansion in AI accessibility on the horizon, OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of what artificial intelligence can achieve. Stay tuned for further developments!

FCC Moves to Require AI Disclosure in Robocalls and Text Messages

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is proposing a new set of rules aimed at enhancing transparency in the realm of automated communication. These proposed regulations would require callers to disclose when they are using artificial intelligence (AI) in robocalls and text messages. In a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FCC 24-84), the FCC emphasizes the importance of informing consumers when AI is involved in these communications, as part of an effort to combat fraudulent activities. The agency believes that such transparency will help consumers identify and avoid messages and calls that may pose a higher risk of scams. FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez expressed the agency's concern, noting that robocalls and robotexts are among the most frequent complaints received from consumers. She further added, "These automated communications are incredibly frustrating, and we are committed to working continuously to tackle the problem." This move is part of a broader strategy...
